Undergraduate Recruiting

We are happy to supervise undergraduate students via Capstone theses, Independent Study, or paid positions. Feel free to get in touch with us, and also check out the University's undergraduate research initiatives:

UROP (year-round) SPUR (summer-only)

Are paid positions available?

Admitted Ph.D. students are typically guaranteed two semesters of funding by the School of Computing, with subsequent years funded by the SSG faculty.

Undergraduate students are funded through University-led initiatives (e.g., UROP and SPUR) or external grants. Please get in touch with us to learn more.

Can students be co-advised?

Yes! Graduate and undergraduate students can be advised by multiple SSG Faculty. However, we recommend you select one as your primary supervisor.

Is prior experience necessary?

At minimum, you should be familiar with programming languages like C/C++ and Python, as well as basic cybersecurity concepts like hacking and testing. Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: fuzzing, compilers, exploitation, and reverse engineering. However, above all else, we are looking for motivated students with a desire for learning, creativity, and building next-generation systems to help real-world cybersecurity!

Why attend the University of Utah?

Located in beautiful Salt Lake City, the University of Utah is Utah's flagship state university and home to the prestigious Kahlert School of Computing. Our highly-ranked research program (a top-40 program on CSRankings) is growing rapidly on all fronts (with many new faculty members being hired each year and a new department building on the horizon), and we are poised to make it one of the premier cybersecurity programs in the world!

Outside of school, you will find no shortage of fun things to do in the Salt Lake Valley and Utah as a whole: from 15 ski resorts (and we offer student ski passes!), our five National Parks (and over 100 other hiking trails), the scenic Red Butte Gardens (and its awesome summer concert series), and award-winning craft breweries, distilleries, and restaurants. And with your free UTA Transit pass, the fantastic University healthcare system, and our international airport, you will find Salt Lake City to be easygoing, friendly, and accommodating.

We love it here, and we are sure you will too!
